My boss is Scottish and says "midge ure" instead of "mid year." This makes it very difficult to get through a monthly catch-up without thinking about how great Ultravoxx are.
I have mixed feelings on the 80s. Aesthetically, sonically, cinematically it's definitely the most fun decade. But I can see why at the time many people thought the pop music was dreadful. I love it, but the lyrics of those bands tend towards the atrocious. Take this slice of nothing from Duran Duran's otherwise synth-tastic Planet Earth:
"Only came outside to watch the nightfall with the rain. I heard you making patterns rhyme like some new romantic looking for the TV sound. You'll see I'm right some other time."
WHAT DOES IT MEAN? WHAT DOES ANY OF IT MEAN? WHERE'S MY EYELINER?! Still, listen to those synths.
And here's some Ultravoxx, complete with marginally less bad lyrics than the above. How gloriously 80s is this track?
